Chinese Shanghai Puppet Festival

Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th of April the China Cultural Center in Brussels invites children to discover the marvel of puppetry! Puppet performances, puppet decoration workshops and an exhibition on the Shanghai art of puppetry are on the agenda of this two-day festival.

On April 4-5, the China Cultural Center in Brussels will welcome the Shanghai Puppet Theater Troupe. On the occasion two puppet performances, two workshops and an exhibition will be organised. The number of participants to the workshops and the number of seats for the two performances being limited, we kindly ask you to register via email at:  info@cccbrussels.be or by phone at: 02 704 40 20.

All these activities are free of charge and are mainly aimed at young children (≤ 12 years old)

Tuesday 4th of April
6.00PM : Puppet workshop, 45 min, 20 children maximum ( ≤ 12 years old) (FULL)
7.30PM : Puppet Performance, duration of approximately an hour

With the guidance of a professional puppet maker, children — with the precious help of their parents — will discover how puppets are created, decorated and brought to life. They will have the opportunity to decorate their own Chinese puppet and learn how to handle it before bringing it back home and train some more to become puppet masters!

A maximum number of 20 children can participate to each workshop; therefore, we kindly ask you to register your child in order to confirm their participation via email at:  info@cccbrussels.be or by phone at: 02 704 40 20. Children must be accompanied by an adult for this activity.

Puppet theatre show

During this show of around one hour, six short puppet performances using various puppetry techniques will be presented to the audience.

The Gatekeeper
A greedy gatekeeper sets up a road block at the city gate to impose a toll together. But in the end his ignorance makes him look like a fool and everybody laughs at him.

A piece of cloth
How an ordinary and simple piece of cloth, in the hands of a puppeteer, can take many shapes and tell wonderful stories.

The Toad and the Geese
Nearby the beautiful lotus flowers pond, a lovely couple of geese gave birth to four ducklings. But a toad has become the mother! How come? The show will tell you all…

The Red Silk Dance
The moon is bright, the stars are shining, willows leaves are swirling in the wind and the red silk cloth is whirling. Following the rhythm of the Butterflies Lovers a puppet comes to life in a fascinating dance.

Return of the prodigal son
A very traditional glove puppet performance where a puppeteer gives life to two different characters simultaneously.

Brief Introduction to Puppetry
The interacting part of the show! Children will be invited to the stage to discover the different kinds of puppet and manipulate them themselves.

Shanghai Puppet Theatre Troupe exhibition

Founded on June 1st, 1960, the mission of the Shanghai Puppet Theatre Troupe is to bring fun to children’s life. For decades, the Troupe has created a number of outstanding and popular shows. Their repertoire covers an extensive range of subject and styles, from ancient myths to modern science fictions, from world-renowned fairy tales to contemporary fables.

The Shanghai Puppet Theatre troupe’s speciality are rod puppets, however their shows also features shadow puppets, hand puppets, and body puppets. The diversity of its repertoire, the extensive themes it covers, and the modern stage presentation contributes to the uniqueness of the Shanghai art of puppetry.

The exhibition presents the journey of the Shanghai Puppet Theatre Troupe from the 1960s to today through pictures of their most successful puppet plays.
