Global Live Streaming of Yue Opera “A Dream of Red Mansions” in Celebration of the Chinese New Year of 2021 — A Taste of the Chinese Traditional Drama

Enriching this year’s “Happy Chinese New Year” events, the Shanghai Yue Opera House will perform the iconic “A Dream of Red Mansions” on February 9, 2021.

Despite the global situation, we keep sharing Chinese traditional culture and festival culture. Online activities are a crucial part of the cultural exchange now. You will be able to virtually attend the opera performance of “A Dream of Red Mansions” on February 9 at 10:00 (UTC+1).

The livestream will be broadcast on several platforms in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Belgium, as well as the Chinese New Year of 2021. The performance is hosted by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Kingdom of Belgium and the Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the European Union, directed by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, and organized by the China Cultural Center in Brussels and the Shanghai Yue Opera House.

The choice to perform “A Dream of Red Mansions” is a logical one. It is a true magnum opus and one of the four classics of Yue Opera. Eleven performers of the Shanghai Yue Opera House will bring the piece to life, playing numerous roles, as is the traditional performance style.

As one of China’s national key art troupes, the Shanghai Yue Opera House has adapted and arranged over 400 traditional plays and classic stories, including “Butterfly Lovers”, “Romance of the West Chamber”, “A Dream of Red Mansions” and “Sister Xiang Lin”, which are recognized as masterpieces.

The venue of the performance is the stage of the Beaufort Terrace in the Yu Garden, a traditional landmark in the heart of Shanghai. The outdoor terrace offers a fascinating view: the modernity of the financial district in contrast with the classic gardens and the bustling downtown scenes.

We find ourselves at this “intersection of history” for a dynamic viewing experience of Yue Opera that will reach audiences in China, Europe and beyond!
