Success of Chinese artists’ performance at Zwevezele Carnival

On Sunday, Zwevezele welcomed the 48th edition of its annual Carnival parade which is known to be one of the most beautiful in West Flanders. During the weekend, thousands of spectators came down the streets to enjoy an impressive parade of more than 50 floats in Wingene, a town not far from Bruges. The China Cultural Center took part in the festivities joining the parade with a troupe of artists from Shanghai, and it was both a great premiere and a success.

Every year, the “Orde van de Bolhoed” (literally “Organisation of the Bowler Hats”) locally organises the Carnival in Zwevezele (Wingene) which is known as one the greatest in West Flanders. The big parade included more than 50 groups mainly composed of local associations. But for the first time, with the support and collaboration of the China Cultural Center, Chinese performers coming from Shanghai exceptionally took part in the local parade.

On Saturday the artists participated in the Chinese New Year Parade in Brussels, and through close links between the local authority and China, they had the opportunity to be part of the Zwevezele festive parade on Sunday. With their traditional Chinese dance performances, music and costumes, they drew the attention of thousands of spectators and enjoyed the exclusive Carnival atmosphere. Very well received, their performance during the parade turned out to be a huge success. Zwevezele not only celebrated Carnival but also Chinese New Year as well as Belgium and China’s friendship.
