Kunqu Opera: “The Peony Pavilion” online

Kunqu Opera fans might remember the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe performing at the China Cultural Center in Brussels. They introduced “The Peony Pavilion” for the first time in 2016 and staged the play again last November.

“The Peony Pavilion” is the most classic play in the repertoire of Kunqu Opera. The story focuses on the romance between DU Liniang and LIU Mengmei It was written by TANG Xianzu, a Ming dynasty playwright, nicknamed “Shakespeare of the East”. The play can be compared to William SHAKESPEARE’s “Romeo and Juliet”, as both are immortalized masterpieces about the tragedy of love.

Now, “The Peony Pavilion” is also available online! The video below is a rendition of one of the 55 scenes in the play, “A Vow”.
