Chinese craftsmanship: porcelain carving, bamboo weaving and paper-tearing

Today we have three videos in store for you, celebrating Chinese craftsmanship. The different art forms are porcelain carving, bamboo weaving and paper-tearing.

First, we meet ZHANG Zongxian, who has been a porcelain carver for forty years. The craft was passed down from his great-grandfather. The art of porcelain carving is believed to originate from Chinese painting and calligraphy. Zhang Zongxian explains the key skills and sees room for innovation and improvement.

In the second video, we learn more about artistic bamboo weaving. Experienced bamboo weaver CHENG Li shares her process, from producing her own bamboo strips to the techniques needed for the weaving itself. The creation of these intricate artworks – handmade bamboo items and bamboo-woven paintings alike – is mesmerizing.

The third video introduces HUA Xingfu and the art of paper-tearing. This is a form of paper-cutting art that doesn’t require scissors or any other tools. It is also very suitable to let children’s imagination roam free.
