Peking Opera Art Show, an exhibition on Chinese Opera

In October, the exhibition “Peking Opera Art Show” will reveal the fascinating world of 京剧 jīngjù (Peking Opera); costumes, makeup, characters and many other intriguing features of this ancient art will no longer have secrets for you.

From October 4th to 25th the China Cultural Center will host the “Peking Opera Art Show”, an exhibition dedicated to the ancient art of jīngjù (Peking Opera) organised in cooperation with the Shanghai Culture and Art Archives (上海市文化艺术档案馆).

京剧  jīngjù came into being during the Qing Dynasty. Born out of a meeting between artists from the province of Anhui and artists from the Han ethnic group, it also integrated tunes, acting techniques and plays from the Kun and Shanxi operas forms over the years, and rapidly became a very popular art at the Qing court. In 2010, the art of Peking Opera was officially added to the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of the UNESCO.

The “Peking Opera Art Show” introduces the history and development of the Peking Opera from the end of 18th century, thoroughly presents the distinctive characteristics of each of the 4 main roles – Sheng (生, male role), Dan (旦, female role), Jing (净, painted face role), Chou (丑, clown role) – and uses them as a connecting thread throughout its display. Photo boards of these four distinguishing figures will also be available for the visitors to take fantastic souvenir pictures!
